SoDak Labs, Inc., has full-time and part-time positions giving hands-on learning in the seed testing industry. We are seeking qualified candidates for the part-time positions of Germination Lab Technician and ELISA Lab Assistant. These part-time positions start at $10/hour and have hourly increases based on hours, dedication and/or performance. We are located approximately 1 mile from campus in the industrial park south of ProBuild and Whiskey Creek in Brookings, South Dakota. These are a great opportunity for students interested in science, transgenic testing, and seed testing.

Full-Time Positions
Part-Time Positions (accepting applications for a September 2018 start date)

Customer Service/Project Manager - Full-Time or Seasonal (9 months)

Receiving Samples

  • Corresponds with new and existing clients on setting up accounts, submitting sample information and tests, answers questions or defers analytical questions to Laboratory Manager
  • Trains new customers how to use our online sample entry and retrieval software. Listens to client needs and discusses with Managers and submits software improvements to Management Team (Lab Managers, Customer Care and Software developer)
  • Enters and edits samples for clients requiring new tests or changes, prints labels, labels and checks correctness of information
  • Manages the MayerSeedLine Samples and Remington Fall Sizing samples
  • Communicates daily with SoDak Staff on expected sample volumes and test type, to best of ability
  • Reviews 20% of outgoing reports for accuracy and clarity
  • Reports improvement needs to Lab Operations to reduce errors throughout laboratory systems
  • Coordinates with CPA on Accounts Receivable and provides CPA activity reports
  • Communicates Software needs with Lab Operations to assure development, data security and integrity

Other Duties

  • Updates/creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for responsibility areas by providing text and photos and incorporating into SOP, QR and WJI templates for submission to Laboratory Operations Team for review
  • Assists in Test Distribution as time permits. Works through established chain of command to assist in other areas

Seed Technologist - Full-Time

Seed Technologist

  • Conduct physical purity, cultivar purity, trait and germination tests including standard, vigor and herbicide bioassay tests
  • Evaluate germinating seeds/seedlings per established procedures/rules on standard, vigor, tetrazolium and herbicide bioassay tests on all submitted species
  • Troubleshoot and monitor for irregularities in test results, media, temperatures, equipment and facilities
  • Examine seed samples to identify other seed species, classifying inert matter, classifying true/off-types varieties and measuring physical characters
  • Review AOSA, ISTA and Canadian Rules and Seedling Evaluation references periodically
  • Expand knowledge and professionalism in seed technology by participating in in-house continuing education, enrolling in relevant coursework, attending workshops, participating in professional seed technology committees and associations

Quality Management System

  • Insure quality and confidentiality of client and company information
  • Review and update quality manual procedures and records for standard testing

Cooperation

  • Assist in other areas of the company as needed
  • Promote responsibility, good work habits, a positive work environment and improving customer service

Required Skills / Experience

  • Degree in Agriculture or Biological Sciences preferred. Registered Seed Technologists (RST) desired
  • Experience in seed testing, laboratory work, and/or agricultural experience preferred
  • Must be well organized, able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods
  • Must have excellent communications skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Must be able to regularly lift 15-20 pounds and able to manage numbers mentally
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work in a fast paced work environment
  • Must be able to display a strong sense of urgency and good judgment

Electrophoresis / PCR Laboratory Technologist - Full-Time

Genetics Laboratory

  • Plan, perform, evaluate, report, and interpret electrophoresis and PCR testing
  • Assist with purchase of equipment and consumables that will allow for accurate and efficient analysis
  • Complete proficiency testing as required to maintain certifications and trait provider approvals
  • Manage and train employees to complete tasks in accurate and efficient manner
  • Assist as time permits with other evaluations and laboratory needs

Quality Mangagement System

  • Create and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for SoDak Labs
  • Communicate and train employees on quality

Required Skills / Experience

  • Ability to perform common laboratory procedures of processing samples and performing standard laboratory techniques in preparing, handling and evaluating DNA and protein testing procedures
  • Must be able to utilize multi-channel pipette, balances and calculate laboratory equations
  • Three to five years experience in electrophoresis and/or PCR testing
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the area of agriculture or biology preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to multitask, excellent organizational skills

ELISA Laboratory Assistant (Part Time - Fall 2018)

Genetics Laboratory

  • Prepare seed samples for transgenic and genetic testing. Samples will undergo ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay) and electrophoresis testing.
  • Prepare solutions for ELISA and electrophoresis testing.
  • Process ELISA plates for washing and evaluation.
  • Lab maintenance such as cleaning, resupplying consumables, etc.
  • Equipment used may include multi channel pipettes, 96 well plate washer, microplate reader.
  • Manage and work with other employees to complete tasks in accurate and efficient manner.
  • Work in a quality system with standard operating procedures and quality records.

High-school level or college-level individuals with interest in Agriculture or Biology preferred. Pipetting skills are preferred.

Work Status

20-40 hrs / week, Flexible work times between 7am and 6pm.

Germination Laboratory Technician (Part Time - Fall 2018)

Germination, Corn Sizing, Planting Line and General Laboratory Duties

  • Work within a team of 8 people to size, treat and package seed corn samples.
  • Plant corn and soybean germination tests within a team of 15 people.
  • Cover seed tests with sand, prepare media and general lab cleanup/maintenance.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for testing.
  • Manage and work with other employees to complete tasks in accurate and efficient manner.
  • Assist as time permits with other evaluations and laboratory needs.

Quality System

  • Follow, create and review SOPs for SoDak Labs.
  • Training on quality system will be included for each position.

Required Skills / Experience

  • Ability to perform common laboratory procedures of processing samples and performing standard laboratory techniques in preparing, handling and evaluating protein testing procedures.
  • High School diploma required.
  • Agriculture or Biology interest is preferred.
  • Must be able to utilize multi channel pipette, balances and calculate laboratory equations.
  • Ability to multitask, excellent organizational skills.
