Soybean Seed Moisture Test
Methods
This test is typically conducted on 250 to 500 grams of seed by use of a Steinlite moisture meter. Oven moistures are more precise and require carefully handling and preservation of seed moisture from bulk seed to submitted sample. Plastic bags validated as moisture proof containers are recommend and limited (2 minutes or less) exposure of seeds to ambient air is also required to sampling process.
What is Reported
Acceptable ranges are typically in the 11 to 12% moisture content range.
Value of Results
Moisture above 12 or higher maybe a concern if the seed is in storage, especially above 13%. Moistures below 10% may make the seed more susceptible to mechanical damage. Immediately after harvest, a moisture equilibration period is often needed, to allow all seed tissues to come to a moisture equilibration. This is sometimes referred to as after-ripening in relation to seed dormancy.
