Soybean Visual Testing
Visual Seed Defects (VSD)
Seeds are rated for soil flecks (none, trace or high) and visual defects. Diseased, discolored, shriveled, green, bleeding hilum and purple seed stain are common defects. Defects are weighed and reported as a percentage.
Visual Rating (VR)
Seed sample appearance is rated 1-5, with 1 being ideal. Defects such as soil flecks, cracked seed coats, disease, discoloring, immature seed are all considered. Most conditioned and color sorted samples will rate a “2”.
