Methods

Starch gel electrophoresis separates proteins according to size. Different proteins code for isozymes which can be stained and identified. Depending on the female and male inbreds, hybrids will display the isozyme patterns of the parents. Hybrid verification can be complete on 30 seeds by confirming the hybrid isozyme pattern that is exhibited by the female and male inbreds. A test for the percent of fertile seeds can be completed with a DNA test.

What is Reported

The genetic purity is determined on 96 seeds with the purity level determined by subtracting the percent off-type and selfs found in the sample. The percent fertile in seeds is reported from 96 seeds.

Value of Results

Hybrid seed corn needs to meet a 95% hybrid standard to be sold per the Federal Seed Act. A uniform field of hybrid plants maximizes yield potential and is aesthetically pleasing when the seed brand sign is displayed.
